An architect grants La Chaux-de-Fonds a place in history…
Situated in the canton of Neuchâtel, La Chaux-de-Fonds is a town famous for its excellent craftsmen, who specialise in watchmaking and microtechnology. It is also the birthplace of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, urban architect, painter and designer, more widely known as Le Corbusier (1887-1965), whose works make a major contribution to the architecture of the town. The imprint of this pioneering artist’s style is visible on some of the greatest buildings of the 20th Century (the majority listed as historic monuments). His work has influenced generations of architects and continues to inspire to this day.
He was also a contemporary of Louis Chevrolet (1878–1941), likewise a native of La Chaux-de-Fonds, who, exiled to the United States, created the eponymous and now famous car brand: a symbol of the American automotive industry.
