City of «enlightenment»Geneva needs no introduction as Switzerland’s economic capital and home to numerous international organisations. But this city also gave birth to symbolic figures such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), a philosopher, author and musician, and one of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment. His profound works were to have a great influence on the French revolutionary spirit, imbuing the literature and social sciences of his time with an air of liberty and equality.
The name Henri Dunant (1828–1910), unlike that of his illustrious fellow citizen, may strike less of a chord. This Genevan banker is nonetheless the founder of one of the best-known international organisations: the Red Cross, which was initially set up to offer aid to the war wounded. This initiative was to earn him the Nobel Peace prize in 1901.
