A historic and cultural centre
To visit Strasbourg is to immerse yourself in centuries of history, a history marked by the intertwining of cultures and religions. The city’s golden era was the Middle Ages, and the influence of the period is still clearly visible in its architecture. In 1988, UNESCO classified the medieval district of Grande Île, also called the «ellipse insulaire» (oval island), a World Heritage Site.
The cathedral
Strasbourg Cathedral, one of the city’s most symbolic monuments, took no less than four centuries to build; the complex architecture and the sense of history it emanates will leave you speechless. A symbol of the medieval golden age and the site of Franco-German reconciliation, the cathedral holds a special place in the hearts of all Alsace people. The district also has much more to offer, with the nearby Oeuvre Notre-Dame museum, rue Brûlée and Cagliostro’s house all well worth a visit.
When evening comes…
Opened in 1992, the Odyssée cinema, a listed public building, has an ambitious, avant-garde and, not least, European programme, meaning you have every chance of seeing a cult film or experiencing a rare viewing at the various film-maker festivals and tributes.
In the space of a weekend
The Christmas market: located in the Cathedral and Broglie squares, this well-known market has been around since 1570!
La Petite France: this 16th century district is packed with charm with its half-timbered houses and many canals.
Parc de l’Orangerie: located in front of the Palace of Europe, the park offers several attractions – a small zoo, a stork breeding sanctuary, a bowling green, a small lake, a waterfall and more.
