A bit of history 📖
The Lausanne <> Paris line is launched on 19 January 1984. It revolutionises Franco-Swiss rail travel and is instrumental in triumphing over other forms of international transport. Unlike the Geneva <> Paris route, which just skims the edge of Switzerland, the Lausanne <> Paris line pushes much further beyond the border, putting Paris within easy reach of those living in Lausanne.
Did you know? The launch of the Lausanne <> Paris line required:
- The building of five tunnels
- The addition of new trains, which was made possible by the extension of the electrical grid.
It was an enormous project that confirmed the importance of Franco-Swiss rail relations for Europe.
High-speed rail: a runaway success
The Lausanne <> Paris line was an instant hit: in February 1984, barely a month after opening, it was already carrying an average of 7,000 passengers a day along the 430 km route through the Jura – just as many as the Geneva <> Paris line!
Today, this legendary line connects Lausanne to Paris in just 3 hrs 40 mins. By the time you’ve got comfortable and ordered some snacks to enjoy while admiring the landscape, you’ve arrived already. In 2023, hundreds of thousands of you took one of our three daily return services to visit a loved one, embark on an adventure or do some business… And, who knows, perhaps there was a future Richard Trevithick among you.*

It’s well known that train travel is better for the planet. This is especially true when you travel to another country. While some journeys are longer than others (but still well worth it), travelling between Switzerland and France by train is simple.
And its carbon footprint is 30 times smaller.
