The best way to experience Paris is like a local – embracing all its personalities and visiting all its districts, and not just heading to the Champs-Élysées. You won’t have a dull moment on this trip to the French capital. Hop on a train and discover the real Paris!
Things to do in Paris
Our recommendations for your getaway to Paris include a mixture of the local and the unusual, not to mention some of the must-see sights. Here are our top five activities you mustn’t miss out on in Paris.
- Brush up on your Parisian classics. The Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Sacré-Coeur, the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre Museum are five of the must-see sights. Pick your favourites and enjoy half a day of culture and sightseeing in Paris.
- Art lovers who are passionate about all things contemporary should head for the Centre Pompidou or the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Both buildings are amazing architectural marvels in their own right and host some unique and exceptional exhibitions.
- Fancy going on a shopping spree? Forget the Champs-Élysées. If you’d like to find some pre-loved items, head to the Saint-Ouen flea market, just outside of Paris. Or would you rather treat yourself to a nice gift? Designer boutiques are just waiting to be discovered in the Marais – a district that is much loved by locals.
- How do you choose a restaurant in Paris? Deciding where to eat is a real headache – there are simply too many districts and too many options. But what if you didn’t (really) choose? Opt for a food tour instead, which will allow you to explore all the districts and the nooks and crannies of Paris that you’ve never seen before. You’re sure to be stuffed by the time you’re done. Find the place you’d like to visit on Airbnb or Secret Food Tours.
- Clubbers should make a beeline for South Pigalle (also known as ‘SoPi’ for short). This district is the epicentre of nightlife in Paris, and there is no shortage of trendy venues to visit. Spend an evening looking back into the past at Machine du Moulin-Rouge – a club where you can dance the night away.
📆 When to go to Paris
Events to attend
- May Night of the Museums. Enjoy many of Paris’ exceptional museums (often for free) for one night only. Would you like to visit the Louvre at night?
- October Nuit Blanche – an arts festival for night owls. A wide range of cultural and artistic activities are on offer in Paris overnight. Explore one neighbourhood after another.
- October Grape Harvest Festival in Montmartre. A genuine Montmartre institution, this festival is a celebration of the harvest of the Clos Montmartre vintages. Yes, you read that right. Didn’t you know that there were vineyards growing along the slopes?
⛅ Weather in Paris
The weather in Paris is mild. So the best time to go and fully appreciate the French capital is between the months of May and September. Tip: even though the weather can be stiflingly hot, if you visit in July and August you’ll have the whole of Paris to yourself, since this is when locals tend to leave the city.
Our Paris secrets
- If you’re a film buff, then you’re in luck! You’ll be able to see the iconic locations from the film Amélie all over Paris (including the grocer’s shop and the famous Café des Deux Moulins on Rue Lepic).
- Music fans should take a quick detour to pay tribute at the grave of Jim Morrison (the lead vocalist of The Doors) at Père Lachaise cemetery.
- There are vineyards in Montmartre to this very day – and you can even sample some wines during the Grape Harvest Festival. Surprise!
