Places to stay in Paris – our top tips

If you’re staying in Paris for the weekend, the rules are pretty simple. Avoid booking at the last minute, choose your favourite neighbourhoods and set yourself a budget. It might seem like Paris prices are out of reach, but there are plenty of great places to stay for a reasonable price in some of the lesser-known areas, where you’ll be greeted with the warmest welcome and the broadest smiles. For a peaceful night’s sleep at a decent price, here are our tips. Grab some paper and a pen so you can take notes!

Youth hostels

The best deals can always be found at youth hostels. They’ve changed in recent years and are now modern, welcoming and bright spaces – attractive options at low prices. There’s no shortage of youth hostels in Paris. The Generator Hotel in the 10th arrondissement has a rooftop with views over Paris, and there’s also The People Hostel in the heart of the city or Jo&Joe, a unique space designed for big kids! With a choice of private or shared rooms, you’re bound to find accommodation at a great price if you try a hostel.

📍Book at the Generator (in the 10th arrondissement), The People Hostel (in the 12th or 14th arrondissement) or Jo&Joe (in Gentilly or in the 20th arrondissement).

Small neighbourhood hotels 🛌

Forget Saint-Germain des Prés, the Champs-Élysées, the area around the Louvre or the Champ de Mars. Try visiting the residential neighbourhoods, a little further away from the city centre but just as charming, with accommodation at a more modest price. There’s a wealth of friendly neighbourhood hotels in the 17th, 13th, 10th or 18th arrondissements to meet your every need. Head to Rue Caroline in the very Parisian neighbourhood of Batignolles, where you’ll find the Excelsior Batignolles just a few metres from Place de Clichy station. Prices start at barely EUR 100 a night for the level of comfort you’d expect from a quality three-star hotel. You pay a supplement for breakfast, but there are a number of places close to the hotel where you can find a good, seasonal brunch for a reasonable price. Our top picks in the area? Hôtel Liège Strasbourg, Hôtel Léopold in Montparnasse or Hôtel Aviatic are also very welcoming.

📍Excelsior Batignolles, Rue Caroline 16, 75017 Paris. From EUR 94 per night.

Hiphop hostels

A kind of mash-up of a youth hostel and a hotel, there are a dozen or so Hiphop hostels in Paris that offer an easy accommodation option. With brilliant service and comfortable, well-kept rooms in central locations, it’s easy to explore Paris for a decent price. The great bonus is that you get the comfort of a hotel, but the social feel of a hostel. The spaces are designed so you can mingle with other travellers.

📍The Lennon Hôtel in the 10th arrondissement, the Vintage in the 9th arrondissement, the Caulaincourt in the 18th arrondissement and over a dozen more dotted around Paris.

Our two favourite budget hotels: the Hoxton Hôtel and the Hôtel Amour ♥

On the right bank of the River Seine, there’s a multitude of charming hotels for less than EUR 150. On the one hand, you have the Hoxton at Grands Boulevards station, just a short walk from the centre of Paris. Enjoy a cocktail at this private hotel dating back to the 18th century. After you’ve had a few, you can pick up the keys to your cosy, reasonably priced room – surprisingly, costing only EUR 100! After your drinks, make your way to your room, where you’ll find a fusion of vintage and 90s chic furnishings, for a well-deserved rest in the heart of Paris.

On the other hand, there’s the Hôtel Amour, in Pigalle. Never been to Pigalle before? It’s the hottest neighbourhood in Paris! The Hôtel Amour is tucked away in a quieter area on the famous Rue des Martyrs, a Parisian favourite, while retaining the feel of the district. The rooms have a 1930s feel with voluptuous paintings on the wall, marble features and warm, comforting colours. The bonus? Eating on the landscaped terrace.

📍Hôtel Hoxton, Rue du Sentier 30 – 32, 75002 Paris. From EUR 100 per night.

📍Hôtel Amour, Rue de Navaran 8, 75009 Paris, France. From EUR 150 per night.

Accommodation booking platforms 📲

You need to get in early, but if you use booking platforms such as Green go or Airbnb, you should be able to find reasonably priced accommodation in good locations. The price for a night’s accommodation varies from EUR 50 to EUR 500 for some options. If you’re travelling alone, you might want to stay with a Parisian local. They’ll be able to tell you about the best places to go in the area, and you can chat to them about their beloved home town. The bonus is that it’s often cheaper when you stay in someone’s home, so it’s a win-win situation!

Chain hotels in the Paris suburbs 💸

If you fancy a weekend away but your budget doesn’t stretch too far, one good solution is to choose a chain hotel located in the outskirts of Paris. Don’t worry, Paris is just a few metro stops away. It’s really easy to get into the city centre within half an hour.

hotel F1, Porte de Châtillon

In the 14th arrondissement in the south of Paris, the hotelF1 at Porte de Châtillon is the perfect blend of comfort and location. If you want to head into the city centre, you’re a short walk from the Porte d’Orléans metro station, where you can hop on line 4 to the Louvre in just 30 minutes. There are 155 recently renovated rooms where you can collapse after a long day walking around Paris. If you’re visiting when the Paris International Agricultural Show is on, the Portes de Versailles convention centre, which hosts this famous event, is just around the corner.

Ibis Budget hotels

Staying in the outskirts of Paris, but this time in the north, the Ibis Budget offers rooms at around EUR 100. Metro line 14 has recently been extended and stops just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. From here, you can get to Gare de Lyon station in half an hour. This is a clean, functional budget hotel that gives you a low-cost option if you’re visiting the city.
